Re/Construct Series: Weaving Sculpture, with Mia Mai Symonds

14:30–16:45

Studios & Gardens, Hertfordshire

This event has passed

Join Mia Mai Symonds for a material-led workshop designed to break down the boundaries between textile weaving and sculpture making, taking inspiration from The Sixties exhibition theme Experiments with Material and Scale and Mia’s recent site responsive Artist Research Residency.

This workshop invites you to re-imagine the scale and dimensions of everyday textiles, exploring the sculptural qualities of woven materials through hands on experiments. You will be introduced to weaving techniques, with both hard and soft materials, and will be encouraged to experiment with the possibilities of making 3-dimensional woven structures, taking inspiration from Henry Moore’s smaller models known as maquettes and working models, and the construction of his wooden supporting structures known as armature.

Mia will introduce you to the importance of touch in understanding shape and form. Material is more intimately understood, and scale more acutely re-imagined when we learn to recognise what surrounds us through touch. Try out new techniques individually and collaboratively and take away something of your own.

Part of the Re/Construct workshop series

Rooted in the processes Henry Moore used to construct his artworks.

Led by creative practitioners, who are redefining social constructs with these ways of working.

About the practitioner

Within her practice, Mia closely studies our relationship with everyday fabric on a magnified material scale, through the enlargement, manipulation and exposure of woven structures.

Through her multidisciplinary works, and often site-specific sculptural forms and installations, Mia interrogates woven textiles as tools for knowledge exchange and universal understanding of human experience.
