In Memory of Stanley Jones

The Henry Moore Foundation is immensely sad to hear of the death of Stanley Jones MBE, Master Printer and long-time friend of Henry Moore.

A slightly grainy black and white photo showing two men, one older and one younger, both are checking a print which has just come off a printing press.

Stanley Jones MBE
1933–2023

Stanley Jones was a Master Printer and founder of The Curwen Studio and The Curwen Print Study Centre. He was one of Britain’s most esteemed print-makers, working with many of the 20th century’s most well known artists, including Barbara Hepworth, Elisabeth Frink, Paula Rego, Ceri Richards, David Hockney and Henry Moore. Stanley was awarded an MBE for his services to the industry.

Henry Moore’s collaborative relationship with Stanley Jones and the Curwen Studio began in 1958. Together the pair developed new and innovative printing techniques which resulted in some of Moore’s most creative works on paper. In recent years, Stanley returned to work with the Foundation, working with our staff and Auberon Hedgecoe to restore the original aluminium lithographic plates from the collaboration.

Stanley died peacefully on 10 February at the age of 89. We extend our condolences and best wishes to his friends and family and the team at Curwen Print Study Centre.
