New library acquisitions: Autumn 2024

Cover of the books Eva Wipf: Seismograf In Nacht Und Licht and Archive of Dreams: A Surrealist Impulse.

Our collecting over the autumn season focused on surrealist sculptural traditions by post-war women artists in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg, ahead of our major exhibition opening in November.

We have been checking the library holdings and adding books about artists who feature in our forthcoming show The Traumatic Surreal. You can now find publications about Eva Wipf (1929-78), best known for her shrine like objects, and Renate Bertlmann (b.1943), a leading Austrian feminist avant-garde visual artist, alongside an extensive selection of books about the surrealist object.

Our thanks go to the curators of the exhibition These Mad Hybrids: John Hoyland and Contemporary Sculpture for sending the catalogue of the show for the library. Olivia Bax did much of the research for the exhibition and catalogue in the library during her Research Fellowship at the Institute last year. Hoyland’s ceramic sculpture will be on show in our Study Galley in November ahead of the touring group exhibition in Sheffield next year.

We’re also delighted to receive the catalogue for the exhibition Roger Ackling: Sunlight, which was held at Norwich Castle Museum and Gallery this summer. The exhibition will be travelling to our galleries next year, and will include a selection of works from the Leeds Sculpture Collection and Archive of Sculptors’ Papers.
