New library acquisitions: Summer 2024

Covers of the books 'Intersections : women artists/surrealism/modernism' and 'Junk art : 66 signs of neon'.

Over the summer the library has been looking ahead to forthcoming exhibitions at the Institute and adding titles which support the programme.

The exhibition The Traumatic Surreal, which opens at the Henry Moore Institute in November this year and celebrates the centenary of Surrealism, has been a particular focus. We’ve added books that give a global perspective on Surrealism, and publications that address the relationship between women artists, Surrealism and Modernism.

The writings and editorial projects of Professor Patricia Allmer (co-curator of the exhibition) are available in the library, including her recent publication Intersections : women artists/surrealism/modernism.

We’ve also added several hard to find items to special collections. Junk Art: 66 Signs of Neon was produced to document the assemblages created by a group of artists formed following the Watts riots in Los Angeles, August 1965. We are also delighted to receive a copy of The Library, a beautiful limited edition, artists’ book produced by Morley House, which explores the experience of trauma and the role of the environment in healing. The authors, Christos Kakouros and Dinara Asadulina, spent time at the Institute to produce this publication.

Recommended reading to accompany the current exhibition is, as always, easily accessible in the library. Everyone visiting the exhibition Hany Armanious: Stone Soup is welcome to read books about the artist and his practice in the library. We’ve also added further titles about contemporary Australian sculptors to the collection – Nicholas Mangan: A World Undone is highly recommended.
