About the images collection

As early as the 1930s, Moore used photography to depict his work, often recording the progress of works from conception to completion and allowing him to experiment with scale.

This collection continues to grow, with photography of new exhibitions added to the archive on a regular basis.

Negatives, prints and transparencies

As well as being an accomplished photographer himself, Moore commissioned others to record every aspect of the production and display of his works.

Moore also received photographs from friends, associates and photographers who visited him at his studios in Perry Green. Among these were Cecil Beaton, Lord Snowdon, Bill Brandt, Irving Penn and Gjon Mili.

Moore’s fascination with landscapes, both as a backdrop and inspiration, led him to create and collect images of bones, stones, shells, trees, roots, sunsets, skies and archaeological and geological sites.

Photographers’ collections

In addition to Moore’s own prints and transparencies, we also hold material from photographers who worked closely with the artist for many years, both professional and amateur.

Our collection includes the archives of Errol Jackson, John Hedgecoe and Frank Farnham, as well as Gemma Levine, David Finn and Michel Muller.

Digital images

In 1995 the first digital images – scans of the first volume of Henry Moore Complete Sculpture – were added to the collection and the process of digitising images of artwork and archive material began.

Through numerous digitisation projects, the archive has so far amassed over half a million digital assets, including scans of historical photographic material, documents, correspondence, news articles and catalogues.

We continue adding to this collection with new hi-res digital photography of artworks, exhibitions and events.
