Summer Makers: Collaborative Sculpture 'Mummy and Baby'

A group of visitors working together to build a papier-mâché sculpture. Their actions are blurred through movement.

Our Summer Makers workshop returned over the school summer holidays to make another giant collaborative sculpture!

Inspired by Moore’s own figurative sculptures on display here at Henry Moore Studios & Gardens, we worked together with visitors to make this new addition out of papier-mâché.

In an exciting twist to this year’s Summer Makers, the design for the sculpture came to us directly from the winner of the Growing Moore & Summer Makers Sculpture Competition, chosen earlier this year and announced via social media.

The winning drawing, created by a 4-year-old visitor to our site, was inspired by Henry Moore’s sculpture Mother and Child.

Standing around 7ft tall when finished, we named the sculpture ‘Mummy and Baby’. She was proudly on display in the Kitchen Gardens until the end of August, before being relocated indoors due to a rainstorm.

We hope you’ll join us to help make another Summer Makers collaborative sculpture next year!
