Art Social: Object Stories and Squishy Sculptures

17:00–19:00

Henry Moore Institute, Leeds

This event has passed

Join artist Emily Binks to explore the use of found objects in her practice, and our recent exhibition by Michael E. Smith. We’ll consider the stories behind everyday objects and make large scale squishy sculptures using reclaimed foam – one of Emily Binks’ favoured materials.

Art Socials are informal, sociable sessions for teachers and art educators of all kinds run by Leeds Art Gallery and Henry Moore Institute. For this Art Social we’ll work with local artist Emily Binks to explore the use of found objects in sculpture, and how her practice connects to our recent exhibition by Michael E. Smith.

Emily Binks and Michael E. Smith both use found objects in their work, responding to everyday household items, revealing the stories they hold and using them to create abstract sculptures.

Using your own objects brought from home, we’ll work with Emily to consider the stories held within objects and how these can be expressed through simple sculpture making. We’ll then use Emily’s collection of found foam and cushions to make large scale squishy sculptures in a playful, collaborative activity ideal for the classroom!

About the artist

Emily Binks is an artist and creative practitioner based at The Art House, Wakefield. She was born in Wakefield, West Yorkshire and studied at Edinburgh College of Art.

Binks examines the notion of ‘home’ through sculptural experiments using mixed media including reclaimed discarded furniture parts, materials often associated with temporary shelter construction and neon.
