We can trace Moore’s interest in the relationship between human, natural forms and the environment in the work of a number of contemporary artists working today.

Join us for a series of three talks by leading contemporary artists, who will each reflect on our 2024 theme Inspiration, Sculpture and Our Natural World. In the final talk in our series, marking the end of our 2024 season, visual artist Rana Begum considers the importance of place in Moore’s practice, and the connection it has to her own work.

Begum will explore the network of studios Moore built across Perry Green and the different purposes they served in his artistic endeavours, contemplating the importance of scale, light, and nature. Interwoven throughout this discussion, she will examine the fluid relationship between an artist’s workspace and their home.

A sculptural installation in a gallery, the artwork is formed by six coloured columns which resemble Lego brick towers

About the artist

Rana Begum distils spatial and visual experience into ordered form. Through her refined language of Minimalist abstraction, Begum blurs the boundaries between sculpture, painting and architecture. Her visual language draws from the urban landscape as well as geometric patterns from traditional Islamic art and architecture.

Light is fundamental to Begum’s process. Her works absorb and reflect varied densities of light to produce an experience for the viewer that is both temporal and sensorial.

Recent solo exhibitions include No.1367 Mesh, Pallant House, 2024, and Dappled Light, The Box, Plymouth.
