About this event
Visit this installation, made with local collaborators, on display during the closing weekend of the season
Inspired by this year’s theme of Inspiration Sculpture and Our Natural World, three community groups have made a series of naturally dyed textile hangings in collaboration with artist Alice Burnhope. While reflecting on Moore’s own themes, processes and surrounding environment, the groups have bundle dyed and pigment painted using botanicals, and collectively drawn up and decided on sculptural forms that have helped their final outcomes take shape.
This installation is a celebration of the outcomes created by our local communities, including participants from Age Concern (Ware), Herts Visual Arts (Stevenage/Welwyn) and Passport To Leisure (St Albans).
With thanks to all the creative contributors and, of course, to textile and socially engaged artist lead, Alice Burnhope.
While the installation is on view on Saturday 2 November, you will be able to try out working with textiles in Textile Transformations – a family-friendly workshop led by Alice. It’s a drop-in session, so there’s no need to book and it will be suitable for all ages.
“The observation of nature is part of an artist’s life, it enlarges his form-knowledge, keeps him fresh and from working only by formula, and feeds inspiration.
“The human figure is what interests me most deeply, but I have found principles of form and rhythm from the study of natural objects such as pebbles, rocks, bones, trees, plants etc.
“There is, in nature, a limitless variety of shapes and rhythms (and the telescope and microscope have enlarged the field) from which the sculptor can enlarge his form-knowledge experience.”
