Cumulative Entanglement

Open until 22:00 during Light Night, then during normal opening hours at Leeds Art Gallery

Leeds Art Gallery, UK

Free Entry

A small child stands in a dark room with light up trainers and a checked coat, touches a metal pole which forms part of a large room-filling sculpture made of scaffolding poles, featuring lights and wires.

Cumulative Entanglement is an immersive and interactive sound and light sculpture by Yorkshire-based artist and musician Rian Treanor.

The 3D geometric structure functions as both an obstacle and a playground for interaction.

You’re invited to feel your way through the environment and discover surprising correlations between touch, sound and light – what Rian calls ‘sensory discontinuities’.

About the artwork

Cumulative Entanglement was created after workshops with blind or partially blind users of Rotherham Sight and Sound.

It was originally commissioned by the Freelands Artist Programme. This new presentation is jointly programmed by Leeds Art Gallery and the Henry Moore Institute, as we launch the Beyond the Visual research season exploring how we engage with sculpture beyond sight.

When can I see it?

During Light Night 2024 (Thursday 24 and Friday 25 October), you can experience Cumulative Entanglement from 18:00 until 22:00.

The sculpture will then remain in Leeds Art Gallery for another week. You can access it during normal opening hours until Wednesday 3 November. Leeds Art Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00–17:00, and 11:00–15:00 on Sunday.
