About this event

Combine a visit to Henry Moore Studios & Gardens with a hands on metalworking and welding workshop.

We’ve partnered with local metalworkers Ore Projects, so that you can see their workspace in action and have a go at bending and welding metal yourselves.

Along with your guided visit to Studios & Gardens, learn how Moore’s own sculptures were made, how this creative process continues in industry today, and receive resources about related career paths.

Guided visit to Henry Moore Studios & Gardens

You and your students will be accompanied by one of our Volunteer Guides for an outside tour of the sculpture gardens, which present an awe-inspiring portfolio of Henry Moore’s sculptural works and creative processes.

Your booking will include additional time for independent study. Feel free to sketch, write or take photos in the sculpture gardens, or use our interpretation room.

Metal workshop at Grandey’s Place, led by Ore Projects

In this ninety minute session, students will learn about making armatures for sculpture.

In art, an armature is an underlying, unseen, supporting component usually made from metal. This inner structure serves as a skeleton or framework to support an object.

During the session you will discover how Henry Moore used armatures in his work, and learn about the processes he used to make small models (known as ‘maquettes’) for the foundries he worked with.

You’ll gain practical hands-on experience making models from card and metal, which you’ll be able to take away with you. You’ll also get the opportunity to try cold bending steel and welding.

About Ore Projects

Ore Projects aim to nurture young people’s talent by offering support, providing hands-on skills, and building self-esteem.

They work with local education groups to provide free hands-on classes in metalwork, alongside careers advice through our mentoring network which is designed to help young people navigate a career within the creative industry.

Ore Projects was set up by RubinoWilson, the design duo responsible for world-class fabrication projects, workshops and events. Daniela Rubino and Lauren Wilson run the project from their workshop, at Grandey’s Place in Hertfordshire.

The workshops take place on selected Wednesdays during term time:

Due to limited capacity, and in support of our audience development aims, priority may be given to first time visiting groups.

Who are the workshops for?

These workshops are free for school, college, university or alternative educational groups.

They are suitable for ages 16 to 25 years.

We interpret sculpture broadly, and facilitate groups from a wide range of subject areas. Beyond art and design, we’ve had groups studying construction, engineering, architecture, mathematics, language, storytelling, history, the natural environment, the power of being part of a community and much more.

Group sizes

We can accommodate a maximum of 30 students per session.

Groups will be divided up so that there are a maximum of 15 students with each of our tour guides and workshop leads.

Secondary schools: you will need to bring at least one supervising adult per 15 students, plus an additional adult.

Colleges and universities: you will need at least one supervising adult per 15 students.

Coaches

Due to the narrow lanes leading to our site, we have a coach length limit of 11 metres.

You will be responsible for transporting your group from Henry Moore Studios & Gardens, to the local workshop space at Grandey’s Place (five minute drive).
