Henry Moore: Sharing Form

Sharing Form takes as its starting point the Moore’s early fascination with the Neolithic site of Stonehenge. He was inspired by the grandeur of the idea – a powerful and primal work of art set in the landscape.
Moore first encountered the prehistoric monument under the moonlight as a young man in 1921. He was fascinated by the relationship between the towering masses of ancient stone, their size and siting in the landscape, and the mysterious ‘depths and distances’ evoked on his returning visits.
While the human figure would become Moore’s primary subject, forms and principals from nature expanded his sculptural language. Bones, stones, shells and plants spoke of growth, support, protection and decay.
From outdoor works which articulate their environment and envelope the spectator, to an intimate display of objects from Moore’s home and studios, this exhibition presents a rich visual biography of Moore’s profound comprehension of the power of form and the relationship between art and human experience.
Henry Moore: Sharing Form is curated by Hannah Higham of the Henry Moore Foundation in collaboration with Mary Moore, the artist’s daughter.
