This display presents work by graphic designer Joe Gilmore (b. 1968), alongside artists’ books from the Sculpture Research Library collection.
Gilmore is fascinated by book design and how books are made. In this display he expands his practice as a graphic designer to investigate the material, formal and contextual systems and conditions of book design, production and publication through the medium of the artist’s book.
Central to the display is Gilmore’s film, Work in Progress (2022-24), a generative screen-based book which produces a sequence of images from overlaying printed pages to explore new readings, and a series of artists’ books, titled ARS. Alongside these are books and catalogues from the Library’s Special Collections which have informed his practice, including conceptual works from the 1960s and 1970s and more recent artists’ books.
