Michael E. Smith preview evening
Henry Moore Institute, Leeds
You are warmly invited to join us as we celebrate the opening of our latest exhibition, Michael E. Smith and our 30th birthday.
All welcome, free entry, drinks will be served.
We are delighted to present a solo exhibition of new work by American artist Michael E. Smith (born 1977, Detroit), made for the Institute’s main galleries.
Before they are installed in the gallery, Michael E. Smith’s sculptures exist only as what he calls ‘material sketches’. Reconfiguring heavily researched and ‘tested’ materials he works on-site, typically during the hours of darkness, to make critical juxtapositions between different found objects and the gallery’s environment.
Imbued with a sense of unease and slapstick humour, Smith’s sculptures speak to today’s relentless global workflow of production, consumption and depletion.
