Object Handling with Kimberley Foster

11:15–13:15 & 14:15–16:15

Studios & Gardens, Hertfordshire

Composite image of a hand clutching a misshapen clay vessel, and a small beaded sculpture in front of a large bronze artwork by Henry Moore.

Touch, hold and carry art objects to discover new connections with Henry Moore’s artwork and the surrounding environment, through hands-on material encounters.

Drop in to meet artist Kimberley Foster, who has fifteen different art objects for you to share and experience.

What do these objects make you feel when held? What new stories emerge, and what connections can you make? Kimberley will guide you through how they are created and why they might be used.

You’ll have the opportunity to take the objects into the gardens and discuss your experiences of handling them with Kimberley, family, and friends.

The workshops run in the morning, 11:15–13:15, and again in the afternoon, 14:15–16:15. Activity introductions will be repeated every half hour throughout the two timeslots.

This event celebrates our seasonal theme of Encounters and is part of a week of Material Encounters activities taking place this August.

About the artist

Dr Kimberley Foster

Dr Kimberley Foster is an artist and academic whose practice explores embodied approaches to learning and interpretation in the art museum. She questions how a different material approach to art objects can engage previously unheard voices and extend the museum experience. These objects are made to be physically encountered, acting as conduits between exhibit and audience. They are material provocations that invite visitors to find new material points of entry and a space for the subjective and autobiographical.

Kimberley is part of an established collaboration sorhed, and has been widely commissioned by creative institutions to make object collections that act as navigation devices and interpretative tools. For the last two years Kimberley has been a Cambridge Visual Culture visiting research fellow, with the focus of her work taking place at the Fitzwilliam Museum.
