Sol LeWitt: Structures 1962-93 and Drawings 1958-92

Sol LeWitt’s structures established his central position within the Minimal and Conceptual art movements which emerged in New York during the 1960s.

By the 1970s LeWitt’s sculptures had become one element within a larger, non-hierarchical grouping of media which included drawings, prints and artists’ books.

His earliest structures embraced the two directions art took during the 1960s – art as concept and art as action/process – to establish a system which underlies his work to this day. From their appearance in 1962, when the structures became the primary medium for his ideas, to the open and closed pieces of the seventies, and the more recent complex forms, maquettes and outdoor pieces, each new development has emerged from the seemingly infinite possibilities contained within the parameters of his ‘permutational system’.

The tension arising from the relationship between the idea and its physical realisation, so central to the early thinking of LeWitt and others, remains at the heart of his work, sustained by the strength of his enduring conceptual model.
