About this event

Join us for our last family-friendly workshop of the season, combining inspiration, sculpture and nature to create textile wall hangings with artist Alice Burnhope.

We will venture outdoors with naturally dyed fabrics, made in earthy tones of golden, brown and green, inspired by Moore’s outdoor sculptures. You’ll place your textiles on intriguing natural textures, creating rubbings that capture the essence of the environment.

Back inside we’ll transform these textured fabrics into shapes and layouts, using pre-designed templates of natural and sculptural forms. By stitching or gluing these pieces, you’ll create an eye-catching textile wall hanging of your own, to take away.

While making your own wall hanging, you’ll be surrounded by a textile installation of naturally dyed fabrics created collaboratively with Alice Burnhope and local community groups.

“The observation of nature is part of an artist’s life, it enlarges his form-knowledge, keeps him fresh and from working only by formula, and feeds inspiration.

“The human figure is what interests me most deeply, but I have found principles of form and rhythm from the study of natural objects such as pebbles, rocks, bones, trees, plants etc.

“There is, in nature, a limitless variety of shapes and rhythms (and the telescope and microscope have enlarged the field) from which the sculptor can enlarge his form-knowledge experience.”
