Wimbledon Weekends at Henry Moore Studios & Gardens

To celebrate Moore’s love of tennis, Henry Moore Studios & Gardens will be screening the Wimbledon Championships throughout both finals weekends.

Having played local double competitions in his youth, Henry Moore was a life-long tennis fan. When Wimbledon came around each year, a line would appear in his diary to “keep free” – especially over finals weekend.

Visitors can enjoy the matches on a big screen in the visitor centre, with Wimbledon-inspired treats available in the café and views over the sculpture gardens.

There will also be drop-in family activities throughout both weekends, including art-making inspired by Moore’s fascinating shut-eye drawings of Wimbledon players. He created these sketches with his eyes closed. A technique that allowed him to capture the energy and movement of the game, rather than its precise detail. His Wimbledon I and Wimbledon II drawings – made using felt-tipped pen on handmade Fabriano paper – reflect his instinctive response to the sport he loved.

Whether you’re a tennis fan, an art lover, or just looking for a unique day out, head to the Studios & Gardens for a weekend of sport, creativity and summer atmosphere in the Hertfordshire countryside.

Henry Moore, 'Wimbledon II' 1982, felt-tipped pen drawing on paper.

“… I amused myself on occasions by drawing without looking at the lines I was making on the paper and this led to drawing an idea with my eyes closed – a simple subject – say a woman reading or a mother holding a child – a man smoking – with one’s eyes closed only the essentials of a subject stand out and the details disappear and although the rationalistic proportions go wrong – yet as in a good caricature, the peculiar character is emphasised.”
